B The Role of Computers and Software in the Law Firm as It Relates to Paralegals Lectures and practical applications focus on the evolution of hardware technology through factual scenarios that students will use to track changes from introduction to dispute resolution. Focus on software applications that include word processing, spreadsheets, billing, scheduling and scheduling, research, and Internet usage. Study of U.S. immigration and citizenship laws with a focus on the interaction of the administrative agencies that administer these laws: Department of Justice, Department of Labor, and Department of State. Topics include the immigrant selection system; the issuance of non-immigrant visas; the reasons for the exclusion of aliens and the waiver of excludability; the reasons for expulsion; Change of status, refugee status and asylum status. A particular emphasis on the role of the paralegal in representation and sensitive communication with strangers. A semester-long internship at a law firm, government agency, insurance company, or for-profit or not-for-profit corporation, depending on available positions each semester. Once a week, seminars cover topics such as ethical considerations in a law firm, experiences as a paralegal articling student, and finding a paralegal. Prerequisites: Senior status and at least 15 hours of paralegal studies or instructor`s permission.
The Code of Civil Procedure prescribes the measures taken in state and federal government trials. This course familiarizes students with the rules and practical requirements of the rules, from filing a complaint to clarifying a judgment and the duties of paralegals in a trial office. Usually offered every semester. How to use the legal library, conduct legal research, write legal analyses in the form of memorandums and use computers as a research tool. The initial goal is to learn how to research legal documents, including federal and state jurisprudence, statutory law, and administrative law. The use of research tools such as abstracts, encyclopedias and CALR is examined as well as abandonment. Also focus on legal writing, from letters to case analysis. Normally, the fall semester is offered. Second-year status required Suffolk`s Associate Degree in Paralegal Studies meets the rigorous standards of the American Bar Association. State laws affect the disposition of a person`s estate in the event of death, and after death, the estate must be reviewed by a court.

This course provides students with an overview of selected materials in international law. It covers practical and theoretical issues of international law, the law of the sea and the commercial implications of definitions of war and international concepts of justice.
Building on the competencies of LAW 301 – Legal Research and Writing I, this course continues to focus on learning how to search for legal documents and synthesize research findings. Writing skills are enhanced through various exercises and revisions. The development of legal analysis skills, the drafting of legal briefs and the use of computer-assisted legal research with Westlaw and Lexis are highlighted. Building on the skills introduced in LAW 211, Litigation, this course provides an in-depth study of the rules of evidence, the process of discovering and preparing a case for trial, and the roles of arbitration, mediation, and negotiation in litigation and other litigation. The theory is combined with practical applications for aspiring paralegals, such as abstraction of filings, collection and preservation of evidence, and case preparation techniques for ADR. Students should note that only the classes listed below are eligible for the certificate due to the requirements of the American Bar Association «Legal Specialty». Certificate students must achieve a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 in their LAVU classes to receive a certificate. Suffolk University students must apply for a paralegal certificate. Applications for a paralegal`s certificate must be completed within the first semester of the final year. The application can be completed online through Undergraduate Admissions. Suffolk University students can take certificate courses before entering the program. Please note that students enrolled in the Bachelor of Applied Legal Studies or Bachelor of Laws are not eligible to obtain the Paralegal Certificate.
