JMLS ranks #82 in terms of highest tuition among full-time law students ($47,500). We rank out of a total of 283 tuition fees from 194 law schools and rank twice as many law schools that have different tuition fees inside and outside the state. Every potential candidate to John Marshall Law School should already be aware of the fact that they are attending a subordinate law school and adjust their expectations accordingly. However, the school really doesn`t do a good job of exposing the hurdles a Marshall graduate faces in terms of post-graduation employment. The school could spend a little more money and time to strengthen its career department and work to reach more former employees by Chicago companies. The recent multi-million dollar renovations will make the school a little more legitimate, but will likely have little to no impact on the school`s reputation or the quality of graduates. * It`s not an «agreement» yet, but Albany Law School is in serious talks with the University at Albany to form an affiliation by the end of the year.
It was unclear whether Albany Law would remain a separate school under the yet-to-be-signed agreement. The curve is steep, and it`s harder to do well here than at other non-elite schools in Chicago – everyone has a chip on their shoulder to go to Marshall. There are VERY smart kids here (attracted by full scholarships), and everyone knows it`s almost impossible to switch from Marshall to BigLaw. This makes the best in its class particularly competitive and mean. If you don`t get a sick scholarship, do yourself a favor and go to one of Chicago`s other law schools. Having Marshall on your resume is a very high hurdle to overcome. John Marshall Law School, located in the heart of Chicago`s Loop, is ideally located in the mid-range of the city, offering all the advantages of a big city and a big school.
For example, it offers the most courses after the first year – with 270 options. The private, independent school underwent a major transformation as it became part of the University of Illinois at Chicago. The new law school, to be called John Marshall Law School at UIC, will be the first public law school in Chicago. Founded in 1899, the school is Illinois` most diverse law school and has received an A Grade in recent analysis of diversity in law schools nationwide. The school focuses on a well-balanced student life and offers evening and day classes and enrollment in January. In the classroom, the trial advocacy program is nationally recognized, as are the intellectual property and legal writing programs. Most students enroll in more than one simulation course. «Our strength lies in hands-on training,» said Dean Darby Dickerson. «It`s a space we`ve lived in since our inception, and it`s in tune with the students we attract, who want to be in small companies or judges.» Students gain lifelong experience in all 10 clinical programs.
The law school has an equitable housing clinic and a veterans` clinic, both of which have received national attention. John Marshall has other centres of excellence such as: employee benefits; Real estate; Information Technology; and international law and awareness-raising. She also participates in the United States. Certification program from the Faculty of Law of the Patent and Trademarks Office and focuses on patent and trademark practices. [Law Admissions Lowdown / USA News & World Report] As far as my school receives, it actually does a pretty good job of educating students on practical things. Many law writing faculties are appendages and teach you a lot about the practice. The same goes for trial lessons, all of which are taught by judges and some AUSAs. Unfortunately, many of the professors who teach the core courses are hopelessly distant and have no meaningful connection to the legal community. In addition to not being able to teach their courses well, they can`t help you find a job by putting you in touch with lawyers they know. The school`s career service department is horrible and OCI is pathetic.
This school obviously thinks OCI is where 20 employers collect resumes online, and 5 mediocre employers actually appear on campus. This year, one of the employers listed was Miami County Public Defender Dade. Career Services staff are lazy and useless. The school`s internship figures are in ruins. This school has actually placed a majority of its best students in some of the best companies (at least the best companies in Chicago). Now, I would say that one or two people a year go to large companies, if at all. John Marshall offers excellent practical training to law students interested in a career in litigation, including intensive legal writing courses, internships in litigation, negotiation and mediation. While no law school can truly prepare you for the day-to-day life of a practicing lawyer, I am convinced that John Marshall has put me in a much more advanced position than many of my peers. No matter how good you are at school and no matter what activities you`ve done, you`ll have an uphill battle with JMLS over your degree and resume.
