At an average follow-up of 4.1 years, EC/MPA treatment did not reduce the overall rate of coronary events in postmenopausal women with established coronary artery disease. There were more coronary events in the EC/MPA group than in the placebo group in year 1, but not in subsequent years. Participation in an open-label extension of the original HERS study (HERS II) was accepted by 2,321 women. The average follow-up time in HERS II was an additional 2.7 years, for a total of 6.8 years. Rates of coronary events were similar in women in the EC/MPA group and placebo in the HERS, HERS II group and overall.
